13h30 : Xavier Lamy (Toulouse)

What does it take to deform an elastic body?

The deformation of a solid can be described by a vector field from the initial configuration to the new configuration. If the differential of that vector field is an isometry at every point, it costs no elastic energy. This condition is very rigid: a theorem by Liouville says that this is possible only if the vector field itself is an affine isometry. The aim of this lecture is to discuss the proof of that result and its stability: if the elastic energy is very small, can we say that the deformation is very close to affine?

Making decisions under uncertainty

This talk is an introduction to stochastic control and sequential decision making. In this type of problem, we aim to modify the natural trajectory of a random process in order to optimize some objective function. Starting from the simplest framework of Markov Decision Processes, I will present the key result of dynamic programming and some extensions leading to open research questions.
